With Halloween behind us it is time to start Jake's Friends Toy Drive for our annual Christmas toy delivery to the family homeless shelter! Multiple sclerosis eats the protective coating of your brain – and your brain by way of legions. The pulp comic Zombie analogy as illustrated in the original artwork by L.Steve Williams JR of New Orleans give a sense of humor to what is usually an all too serious condition. He illustrated me fighting off (and winning) a zombie attack to get the point across. I also happen to have a fondness for geeky B movies with zombies – so it is a good fit.

MS is serious business …. One that rarely leaves me laughing. It has been a challenge to say the least, but I do try to keep a sense of humor about it all. All of the proceeds from the sale of Jeaux vs Zombies will go towards my medical fund for infusions, medications and treatment. My goal is remission, a goal that I will achieve. Wear a Jeaux vs Zombie shirt and let people ask about it – spread the word that much more research is needed for MS. It does not yet have a cure – and the treatments are often debilitating in themselves. More research must be done to improve the lives of those living with this monster of a disease.

Multiple sclerosis is a disease that attacks the brain and central nervous system eating away at the protective coatings of bundles of nerves in the brain called myelin, the protective insulation surrounding nerve fibers of the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord). Myelin is destroyed and replaced by scars of hardened "sclerotic" tissue. (Multiple sclerosis actually translates to many scars) Some underlying nerve fibers are permanently severed.. The damage happens over night with no warning and there is no way to know whether the damage is permanent or will improve. So far in my fight against MS I have woke up to find that I can not see (optic neuritis – a common complication of MS) I have lost the use of my legs three times. Sometimes it is as simple as your hand deciding it no longer wants to hold whatever you are holding at the moment and “plop” it goes to the ground. Other times it is muscle spasms so intense and painful that you wish someone would just knock you out with a hammer. As the saying goes, there are good days and bad. On the good days it might be hard for anyone to understand that there is anything at all wrong. On the bad days – you wonder if you will have anymore good ones. As some of you know I am fighting MS in a very aggressive treatment plan at the moment. My wonderful friends (Kacey and Karen & Jeff) have put together a benefit to assist in the huge medical expenses that go along with fighting this monster into remission. The expenses with insurance is about 800. a week to pay for daily Iv infusions, my Neurologist visits, oral medications, daily self injected shots, week long hospital stays, multiple cat scans, brain scans and mri scans and of course the lovely spinal taps. Please spread the word and come out to see some great musicians and a burlesque and comedy show and silent auction all wrapped up in one this Saturday night at Howlin Wolf.
All performers, artists, auction items and the venue have so generously donated thier time and talents for this event and 100% of the proceeds will go towards those expenses so that I can continue my treatments.
New Orleans is a town filled with amazing people and I am proud to be a native and call these people my friends. Please help by attending the event and spreading the word as much as you can! Donation items for the auction are still being accepted and are very appreciated.

24 soldiers killed themselves just in Jan. 09 - six times as many as killed themselves in January 2008, according to statistics released Thursday.
More soldiers have killed themselves than died in combat last month. According to Pentagon statistics, there were 16 U.S. combat deaths in Afghanistan and Iraq in January. T e Military across the board seems to have been having a suicide epidemic; this is usually reflective of the general population.
